5 Reasons the Mazda Miata is the Perfect First Sports Car

The Mazda MX5 Miata has been considered a top choice for those looking to get into sports car ownership since it was created in the early 90s. And it’s with good reason – the Miata offers an unmatched combination of affordability, ease of maintenance, and fun behind the wheel. Here are five reasons why ANY generation of the Mazda Miata is the perfect sports car for beginners, and why it’s likely a perfect choice for you!

Affordable Price Point: The Miata is relatively inexpensive compared to other sports cars on the market, making it a more accessible choice for first-time sports car buyers. A brand new Miata can be purchased for around $26,000, while other sports cars can easily cost twice as much or more. Of course, you can buy used, or buy an older Miata, which will save you even more money. When I originally bought MY first Miata, a used 1993, I only paid $1,000 for it. This lower price point makes it easier for first time sports car owners to purchase one without breaking the bank.

Excellent Handling and Driveability: With its lightweight design, near 50/50 weight distribution, and responsive steering, the Miata exhibits excellent handling characteristics. This makes it an excellent beginner sports car, as it is easy to drive and predictable up to it’s limit. Additionally, the Miata's engine is not too overpowering. This means you can drive it hard without worrying about speeding (too much, still be careful you there!) This makes it a good choice for those who want to get into sports cars while having an easy to drive, relatively tame car. That said, they’re still an absolute blast!

Good Fuel Economy: The Mazda Miata gets great gas mileage, making it cost-effective to own and operate. Lots of sports cars get horrible gas mileage, but not the Miata. A new Miata gets an estimated 26 miles per gallon in the city and 35 miles per gallon on the highway. Older Miatas aren’t too far under that, and I was able to average 27 in my 1993. This provides HUGE smiles per gallon, while staying light on the wallet!

Fun to Drive: The Miata is a blast to drive, with its agile handling and peppy engine. Its open-top design and sporty performance make it a great choice for those who want a fun driving experience. Whether you're cruising down the highway or tackling winding back roads, the Miata is sure to put a smile on your face.

Parts and Accessory Availability: The Mazda Miata has a HUGE aftermarket community, with a wide variety of parts and accessories available. This is a plus for beginners who want to customize their Miata, or make repairs on their own. From performance upgrades to exterior modifications, there's no shortage of options for those looking to personalize their Miata. Information is also super easy to come-by, from YouTube channels to forum posts to articles, and much more. On top of that, the Miata's popularity means that parts are relatively inexpensive, making it easier for beginners to maintain and repair their car at an affordable price point.

To wrap up, any generation of the Mazda Miata is a great sports car for beginners thanks to its affordable price point, ease of use, fuel efficiency, fun driving experience, and wide availability of parts and accessories. If you're in the market for a fun, lightweight and affordable sports car, the Miata is definitely a great choice! Want to learn about the differences between the Miata’s generations? Click here!
